Copy an AI notebook when you need your own version
Gemini Notebook is Google's AI workspace for asking questions and making summaries from sources you choose. Its August 17 update lets you copy a notebook to adapt it, but the copy will not follow later changes to the original notebook.

The August 17 release lets a person copy sources and generated materials such as audio overviews, study guides and slides. Drive documents come across only if that person has permission to access and copy the original files. Personal notes and chat history do not transfer.
Two kinds of update matter. Changes to the original notebook do not appear in its copies. But Google says imported Drive files can update from their originals. Copying a notebook therefore does not freeze every document it uses.
Consider an onboarding notebook. This is an illustrative example: the shared version holds the team's common material. A manager copies it to add department-specific guidance. If the original owner later changes the notebook's instructions or generated study guide, the manager's copy will not receive that change. An included Drive document may still update separately.
If your team uses Google's new copying option, keep common material in the shared notebook. For an independent version, put the original notebook's name and the copy date in the title. That helps people recognise which version they are reading. The date marks when it was copied; it does not make linked Drive files a frozen record.
